New bow roller with 351b Delta Anchor |
| Comments |
Sailing with young children, that's our speciality. Samantha 7 and Zach 4.
Because of this we spend alot of time on the hook. We usually spend most weekends at Angel
I. in the S.F. Bay but also cruise the bay and Delta. My longest trip was from L.A. to
S.F. The boat can take a real beating, don't worry. As far as upgrades I couldn't live
without. 1. A big anchor roller, 2. High output alternator and 3. A TV with a Nintendo (it
enables me to get some quality cocktail time in). |

teak (works great), replaced water heater, wiring harness upgrade, epoxy coated bottom,
dripless packing, Drivesaver flexible coupling, rebed ports, lazy jacks, single line
reefing, battery charger, refrigeration (water cooled), replace lifelines (and crimp),
rebed stanchions (prior owner had gloobed clear silicon around the bases), rebed chain
plates, replace head, rebed steering column |

Replace black plastic sliding doors. Add overhead shelf with microwave.
Access hatch to v-berth. |

Stripped bottom gelcoat, dried the hull (3 months on
the hard), treated blisters, and applied new barrier coating. Replaced
water heater and almost every hose in the bilge and head, and installed
a new toilet. Also replaced the water tank control valves with lever-type
valves. Removed and re-painted the mast and replaced standing rigging.
Raised the back-stay splitter for better access when using the stern
ladder. Installed a 44" wheel. Replaced and re-organized running
rigging, and fabricated and installed mounting pedestals for halyard,
topping lift, and reefing line clutches. Added spinnaker pole, line-control
whisker pole and reaching strut. Re-built stern pulpit adding port
and starboard pulpit seats, and radar post with outboard motor crain,
and radio and GPS antennae mounts. Installed new life lines. Replaced
dodger and canvas covers. Replaced main cabin and galley lights with
flourescent white/red fixtures. Installed galvanic isolater, Heart
charger-inverter, converted to gel batteries, added two batteries
(now gives us 400 amp hours in 2 banks), installed Link 2000, and
rebuilt electrical pannel. Installed Stereo AM/FM/CD with 10 CD changer.
Added Raytheon radar, EPIRB, Autohelm pedestal-mounted autopilot,
Garmin GPS, and KVH Quadro instruments. Installed Garhauer adjustable
jib cars, mounted heavier Garhauer(Cat 42) traveler, and installed
Garhauer boom vang. Replaced engine control panel. Installed oversized
engine heat exchanger, larger raw-water strainer, SS prop shaft, and
3-bladed feathering prop. Built cradles under the V-berth for spare
CNG and Scuba tanks (removed the drawer) and installed custom V-berth
mattress. Replaced forward fiberglass hatch with lexan hatch for better
V-berth light. Added anchor road that is end-spliced to 70' of high
strength chain attached to a Fortress FX-23 anchor. Enlarged anchor
locker and reinforced bow toerail to support later addition of anchor
windless. (A confession here: part of the reason for enlarging the
anchor well was to access and repair a hole in the bow from a collison
with another raceboat. Honest, we were on starboard!) |
| Planned Upgrades |
Planning to install a pair of secondary winches for
the cockpit (Lewmar #43's already purchased). Want to replace the
original Bowmar portlights with Lewmar non-opening portlights (I hate
leaks!) Also planning to replace the cabin side windows with new Lexan
that's bedded in place (ditto leaks!). Need to replace the articulated
light fixtures with newer energy efficient lights. Would like to replace
the rudder with an elliptical one (this will probably envolve heavy
negotiation with Diane). Also would love to procure an 8-person coastal
survival raft (will also require negotiation with spouse). |

| How Boat Was Named |
You'll have to meet Diane to fully understand! |
| Comments |
We had quite a bit of frustration with the boat initially,
but most of that was the result of neglect on the part of the original
owner. Finally, this year, I think I can say I'm happy with how the
mechanical aspects of the boat are. I'd like our sailing performance
to be better but I think much of that is a question of sailing the
boat more than we have, and having changed some of the rig settings.
It's hard to race and cruise with the same boat, particularly when
the boat wasn't designed for racing. All things considered, we're
pretty happy with this boat now and I'd predict we'll have it for
a long time. |
