Completed the 1998 Pacific Cup race from
San Francisco to Hawaii with a race crew of my 19 year old son and
four other friends. Then turned around in one week and sailed back
with my wife, son, step-son, and brother-in-law. The boat was great!
Although we took a beating a few times, i.e. 20-30 foot seas on the
beam for the last few days coupled with winds sustained in the mid
twenties and thirties with gusts above, and one bad pooping where
a laaaarge wave broke over the stern and submerged the helsman up
to his chest, the boat performed wonderfully and shook everything
off with no significant damage. Our autohelm 4000 broke on the way
back just a day out of Hawaii. We were worried about having to self-steer,
but we trimmed Jennifer Anne out and locked the wheel brake and she
literally sailed herself for the next 1,000 miles. I can't say enough
about the quality of construction and the strength of the rig. For
any of you who have considered long voyages and have wondered about
whether a Catalina 34 is up to it, we covered 4,700 nautical miles
in 5 weeks with no structural damage whatsoever. This was, by the
way, in a race which saw more than its share of broken rudders, broken
booms, damaged masts, etc. on a great many boats.
The one downfall, I think of the boat for this kind of sailing is that she is a bit
squirrely downwind. On the race over we were obviously hand steering all of the time. I
think, though, that it would take quite and autopilot or a remarkable windvane to control
her downwind without worry of jibing in trade wind conditions. That should, however, be
true of almost any fin keel boat I suspect.
Two minor areas of irritation. One - the head is bolted with lag bolts. These are
inadequate when you are using it heavily in rolly conditions. The lag bolts should be
replaced. Two - the galley stove gimbal on the aft side is mounted into a wood spacer pad
that is simply screwed into the bulkhead. This needs to be through bolted. The last day
out in the worst conditions we experienced, the wood screws tore out of the bulkhead
leaving the stove in place, but not able to swing.
Another thought - Lee cloths for the saloon berths are a necessity if theres more than two
aboard. Hard on the weather with good wind and sees, the v-bert is suited for nothing but
storage. The aft berth is great on both tacks, with its user lying athwartships on a
starboard tack and fore and aft with feet on the settee portion of the aft cabin on port
tack.
Also, installation of a galley strap should be considered mandatory. For long range work,
a saltwater pump for the sink to assist with water consumption (we did not have a
watermaker, simply carried the 78 gallons of normal storage supplemented by several cases
of drinking water and four six gallon jugs in the lazarrette).
The Adler-Barbour twelve volt refrigeration was great! It ran flawlessly and the small
freezer was actually large enough to freeze meat for all dinners for each passage even
with the large (6 going over, 5 coming back) crews.
The moral of our trip overall, however: don't hestitate to take your Catalina off shore.
She's a solid boat and sails well in all conditions.
One final observation - I had heard for years that you could navigate to Hawaii by
watching for jet contrails. Whoa! That would not be cool. We never saw a single one. I
think this is one of those little factoids about sailing we all hear and think sounds
somewhat logical so is probably true. Probably on line with those comments you hear from
time to time about Catalinas being "lightly constructed" and not safe for off
shore work.
About a year after the race, my wife and I sold her in order to
afford to both send my son to college as well as to enable us to
build a new house. Both are now accomplished (yea!) and just a couple
of weeks ago, the fellow I had sold her to, called to ask if we
wanted to buy her back. We went to see her and she is in great shape.
He has added all new canvas, new fuel tank, new refrigeration and
much more. Plus, all of the equipment we built and installed for
the Pacific Cup is still on board, even the auxilary rudder, making
her quite easy to prepare for another ocean trip.
Needless to say, we couldn't turn the chance down and now have her
back. The entire family is thrilled. We have plans to berth her
near home in Stockton, California for this year and then move her
back to the Bay Area next fall. Already beginning to have those
wonderful sailing dreams... perhaps a trip to Panama and then on
to Europe in a few years...

Our previous boat was a Beneteau F265. We loved that boat, fast and
beautiful. We didn't think we would be happy with any other boat besides another Beneteau.
The C34 has changed all that. We love this boat and would probably move into a larger
Catalina. |

We added a cabin heater located underneath the chart table.
It's a water line heater that utilizes hot water from the engine, across a small radiator
that has a 3-speed fan blower motor. It's the same hot water line that heats the potable
water. When the engine is running, it keeps the cabin at a comfortable shirt-sleeve
temperature, when the outside air is cold and damp. |
| Planned Upgrades |
The previous owner, Dennis & Elaine Carlin, added
everything you could ever want in a sailboat! The only update I will probably make, is to
change the table to a smaller cocktail table. |
